Carbon Management
Scaling permanent, affordable carbon removal in pulp and paper
THE SOLUTION
CO280 Solutions Inc., a leading developer of carbon removal projects, is supporting the scale-up of permanent, affordable carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) in the pulp and paper industry.
With funding support from CICE, CO280 in partnership with Aker Carbon Capture is building the world’s first demonstration of carbon capture technology to capture and purify CO2 from a pulp and paper mill recovery boiler. The mill is located on the US Gulf Coast.
The mill’s recovery boiler generates approximately 800,000 tpy of biogenic CO2 from black liquor combustion at 14% concentration. The project will test a slipstream of flue gas on a Mobile Test Unit (MTU) for 6 months, starting September 2024.
The goal of the project is to verify and de-risk key performance and cost parameters for full-scale deployment of the technology on this specific flue gas, including CO2 capture efficiency, energy consumption, solvent consumption, product gas purity, and emissions.
On successful completion of this project, CO280 and its partners plan to build a commercial scale project that will capture and sequester 800,000 tpy of CO2 from the same recovery boiler. Captured CO2 will be compressed and transported via pipeline to a geologic CO2 sequestration facility 35 miles northeast of the mill for permanent sequestration.
