Battery Technology + Energy Storage

Garibaldi all-weather battery energy storage system

THE PROBLEM

Moment Energy provides a clean, affordable, and reliable battery energy storage systems (BESS) by repurposing retired EV batteries. Currently, recycling technology has not advanced to profitably recycle EV batteries in bulk. In traditional Li-ion battery recycling, up to 40% of the materials are not recovered. Materials in an EV battery like iron are not profitable to recycle and are often disposed of, or stored rather than recycled, despite having an average of 80% original capacity remaining. When used in an energy storage system, these materials can deliver an additional 7-10 years of service.

THE SOLUTION

With millions of EVs expected to retire over the next few years, the opportunity to create a circular economy is the basis of this innovation project. Moment’s proposed Garibaldi product serves to provide the same battery energy storage system functionality that its Flora units provide, in terms of energy capacity and rated power, but with a greatly expanded thermal operating range.

The Garibaldi units will be designed to be suitable for outdoor operating temperature ranges from -40C to +40C, and will be rated to ensure suitable exposure from all season weather conditions. A pad-mountable design will enable multiple units to connect together for increased energy capacity and rated power, providing a more accessible and cost effective energy option for both on- and off-grid certified deployments.

Beyond the applicability and use case scenario for Moment’s BESS, safety is critical for energy storage commercialization. Moment is working to enhance its safety credibility and reliance to provide the most safe, robust, highly performant second life products on the market.
