Accelerating the transition to low carbon fuels in B.C.

With its ambitious climate targets and enabling policies such as the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, British Columbia has become as a world class leader in low carbon bio and synthetic fuels. Innovative solutions are constantly being developed that leverage forestry, agricultural, municipal, and other sectors to derive value from waste and produce low carbon fuels.

CICE funding for low carbon bio and synthetic fuels

Solid biofuels, such as wood pellets, have been an integral part of the B.C. bioenergy sector for more than 50 years. They have helped produce heat, electrical power, and drive exports. Additionally, low carbon liquid fuels present a significant opportunity to reduce emissions, especially in the transportation sector. Low carbon gases are also crucial for displacing natural gas in the industrial and utility sectors, among others.

CICE funds multiple pathways to low carbon fuels, including:

  • Wildfire mitigation and forestry residue management
  • Diversification of B.C.-based feedstocks
  • Development and scaling of novel conversion technologies
  • Production and utilization of syngas and synthetic fuels produced using biomass, renewable power, direct air capture or stranded biogenic emissions
  • Commercialization of bio-based carbon (char, biochar, biocoal and activated carbon)
  • Measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon intensity
  • Decarbonization and fuel displacement of remote and Indigenous communities
