Battery Technology + Energy Storage
Development of a battery energy storage system for high-speed vessels
THE SOLUTION
Corvus Energy supplies a portfolio of energy storage systems (ESS) for various types of vessels in the marine industry, such as ferries, tugboats, cargo vessels, and fishing vessels. With funding from CICE, Corvus is developing the Dolphin 2.0 prototype to electrify various segments of marine passenger transportation. The Dolphin 2.0 uses the same battery cell that is used in Tesla products and is packaged to IP44-compliance standards. The design also incorporates patented technologies for battery thermal management.
The Dolphin 2.0 ESS design will be the most lightweight and compact option in the marine industry to incorporate a battery cell with a high charge/discharge rate, making it ideal for use on lightweight, high-speed vessels. Globally, at scale, this project has the potential to result in annual GHG reductions of >100 megatonnes per year.

“Rather than changing how we develop ESS tech, the CICE investment is allowing us to do it more efficiently and effectively, and to scale to achieve better outcomes than we would have had otherwise. For example, it’s supporting a larger engineering team, which shortened the Dolphin 2.0 development schedule, improved our time-to-market by roughly three months, and allowed for higher levels of innovation and technical problem-solving in the new tech we developed."
